sIndependent Reading Selections
Students are required to have an Independent Reading Selection at all times and should be reading for a MINIMUM of 20 minutes each weekday from their Independent Reading Selection. It is important that all students read daily from their Independent Reading Selection so that they are equipped to answer questions about their selection on quizzes and tests.
An independent reading selection is a book or other reading material that you choose to read outside of your assigned reading in the course. The first lesson of each unit includes a suggested list of reading material that goes along with the unit's theme. You may choose something from that list, or something else. If you have another book in mind that you would enjoy reading, go for it! Just make sure that it's a comfortable reading level for you. You may also want to look at our Peer Book Review tab. Maybe your classmates have reviewed a book that may interest you! It shouldn't be too hard or too easy. Your IRS should be school and age appropriate. I have attached a guide to the 5 Finger Reading Rule for you to check out and use as a guide to reading level appropriateness when there is a question. Make sure your learning coach approves of your choice. You should always be reading something. This goes for the whole year.
Here is an excellent tool to help you find a book that is at your reading level and includes your interests:
https://fab.lexile.com/
Click on the link and use the box under "I don't know my Lexile measure".
This search engine will consider your comfortable reading level and your interests. It will provide you with titles of appropriate books that you can take to the library or find on amazon.com.
If you are in doubt about your selection, let's talk about it! Don't hesitate to call your teacher.
Teachers may require you to choose a different book if yours is determined to be inappropriate.
